Unlike the western horoscope that is based on the months, the Chinese horoscope works on the Chinese year of birth. Those who are born between January and February could be considered as in the cusp.

The years are grouped under 12 animal designations.

It is believed that Lord Buddha asked all the animals to come to him but only 12 obeyed and turned up. As a reward, he named a year after each animal in the order of arrival - Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

The animal ruling the year of your birth has a major influence on all aspects of your life. The time of day and the season of birth also have some influence.
